Free to a good home – are you sure?

Individuals involved in dogfighting are always on the lookout for bait dogs.

The Heidelberg SPCA writes:

Are you sure you’re giving your pet a good home?

We all have seen these adverts or heard somebody say this about puppies. The truth is, how sure are you, the one giving away a puppy, that the puppy will indeed go to a good home?

Especially in the cases where the animals are advertised online, on social media or in newspapers. You have no idea who the people are to whom you entrust your puppy.

Dogfighting is real and these heartless individuals are always keeping an eye on these type of ads.

They grab up these puppies and then use them as bait dogs.

A bait dog is basically a punching bag for game (fighting) dogs.

Your puppy, given to a good home, could easily be one of the unlucky few who are used for these fighting dogs to practice on.

A bait dog can be any dog. It could be your dog. Although they (the ones who use them) prefer to use non-aggressive or submissive pit bulls, they will easily use anything they can get for free.

When they get pit bulls who won’t fight or don’t fight well, they use them for bait dogs.

They are well known for stealing other people’s pet pit bulls as well. They will take them right out of your yard if they can.

But, they will also take any other dog they can get their hands on.

Bait dogs don’t stand a chance to fight back as their mouths are taped and they are tied up.

Even if your puppy doesn’t end up as a bait dog, it doesn’t mean that you have given it away to a responsible, caring and loving owner.

Are you willing to take a chance?

We must stop this vicious cycle, why won’t you help?

It all starts with you.

The solution is easy:

• Don’t give away dogs.

• Stop breeding unwanted litters.

• Stop the overpopulation.

• Be wise and sterilise your animals.
