Students march against gender-based violence

March to Heidelberg SAPS raised awareness about abuse against women.

Sedibeng TVET College held a gender-based violence awareness campaign on April 22.

The students embarked on a peaceful march to the Heidelberg SAPS, where they handed over a memorandum to the Heidelberg SAPS station commander Col Phiwe Ndwandwe.

The memorandum listed the students’ grievances regarding GBV. There were previous complaints regarding GBV from students and teachers at the campus.

The initiative was taken to break the silence. The marchers also asked for more SAPS visibility around the campus and hostel.

The memorandum was handed over to Col Phiwe Ndwandwe, Heidelberg SAPS station commander.

Ndwandwe accepted the memorandum and said he will work on ways for greater police visibility.

The station commander provided advice to the students on how to prevent GBV. This includes breaking the silence, acting against abuse, not looking the other way when you know someone is being abused and reporting all forms of abuse.

The students were given literature containing contact details and where assistance can be obtained. The students were also given information on how to apply for a protection order.

Abuse or criminal activities should be immediately reported to your nearest police station.

The march aimed to highlight the scourge of GBV.
