Hijackings on the increase in Heidelberg

Hitchhiking could lead to arrest and criminal charges.

Heidelberg SAPS station commander Col Phiwe Ndwandwe has issued a warning regarding hijackings that are becoming a problem in the area.

Ndwandwe said: “It is illegal to hitchhike or walk on the national highways. We are ready to take all steps needed to stop it.

“It could be a fine or even possible arrest for disregarding the by-law.”

There are criminal activities taking place in the area where hitchhikers are used as bait by hijackers.

The latest report came from a family travelling on the N3 from Durban to Johannesburg.

They drove over something that was thrown onto the road that damaged their vehicle.

When they stopped, they were confronted by armed men who robbed them.

A case was opened at Linden SAPS and will be transferred to Heidelberg SAPS for investigations.

Ndwandwe said: “Avoid stopping on the highways, especially in dark and unlit areas, and do not pick up hitchhikers on the highways.

“If law enforcement finds you hitchhiking, you will be apprehended and could be arrested and have a criminal record for your offence.

“Drivers must be alert at all times. Even though you want to be a good Samaritan and help someone, it could end up costing you your property or even your life.

“Always plan your route and be aware of where the safer areas are and the petrol stations in case you want to go to the bathroom.”

Tshepo Molaba of the Heidelberg Taxi Association said: “Use registered taxis that travel between your destinations. It is your responsibility to ensure you use the correct transportation.”

Ndwandwe concluded, “We are experiencing an increase in the number of hijackings and kidnappings. We have put measures in place to fight the criminal activities.”

The victims are usually dropped off near the Vosloorus policing area.

Tips to avoid being hijacked:

• Don’t stop in deserted places.

• Don’t drive during the night if at all possible.

• Don’t stop to help others.

• Don’t give people lifts.

• Avoid being bottled or cornered by two or more vehicles.

• If you suspect something, drive straight to the nearest police station.

• When you are hijacked, try to identify places and perpetrators. Report the matter as soon as possible to the police.

“The safety of yourself and your property is of great importance,” said Ndwandwe.
