EMPD Tip of the week: EMPD warns against parking on a traffic island

A traffic fine will be issued if a motor vehicle is found parked on a painted or traffic island.

EMPD has issued a strong warning to motorists cautioning against parking on traffic or painted islands.

Painted islands are yellow lines painted on a public road.

Lerato Monyane of EMPD said these lines are usually painted where there are residential places, on the outside of the public road where the owner of the residential home can drive in or out of their premises.

“You also find these at the traffic lights where there are two lanes and the road is not big enough for other vehicles to turn on the right side, especially the trucks that have a warning sign written ‘this truck uses two lanes to turn’.

“A painted island can be found on several public roads and it simply means no parking there or even stopping for the traffic light to give a signal to drive,” she said.

A traffic fine will reportedly be issued if by any chance a motor vehicle is found on top of the painted island parked as per NRTA 93/96 Reg305(5) parked on a traffic island.
