Gauteng Traffic Police urges vigilance in rainy weather

Gauteng Traffic Police calls upon road users to exercise caution during rainy weather.

Gauteng has in recent times experienced several crashes as a result of rainy weather.

This is according to Gauteng Traffic Police, which stated the rainy conditions are characterised by slippery roads and in some instances, flooding.

Sello Maremane of the provincial traffic police urged road users to exercise caution during the rainy season, especially when driving to and from their respective areas of work.

He said several crashes and flooding were reported since the early hours of March 9 in the province.

“Various crashes have been reported, notably along the N1 north, towards Maraisburg off-ramp and the N12/R24 west before Gilloolys. Also, the N3 north before the London Road exit and the R21 south on the link to the R24 west, to mention a few,” he said.

Maremane said the province has also experienced flooding in some areas, such as the Buccleuch Low Bridge in Johannesburg and Goldman Street, corner Sauer in Florida, among others.

Motorists are reminded once again to keep a safe following distance, slow down during wet conditions, switch on headlamps while driving, and always buckle up.

“We urge road users to avoid low-lying bridges and areas prone to flash floods wherever possible. We also discourage motorists from driving through fast-flowing water, since it is difficult to measure its depth. This is an important step towards saving the lives of road users, especially during rainy conditions,” he said.

He also assured the public they will be on high alert to ensure the safety of road users during this time.
