EMPD tip of the week: Sheds light on treating four-way stops or traffic circles

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has urged motorists to adhere when treating four-way stops or traffic circles.

At a four-way stop, the vehicle that is first behind a stop sign has right of way.

This procedure also applies to a traffic light that is not working or malfunctioning.

Lerato Monyane of the EMPD reiterated that the first motorist to be at the traffic light has right of way.

“This is a clear indication that obeying these K59 rules can eliminate small mistakes that can cause a huge problem, even a fine as per NRTA 93/96 Section 64 regarding driving a motor vehicle inconsiderately. This can amount to R1 000,” she said.

In a case of a traffic circle, she said the scenario changes, the motorist on the right-hand side has right of way.
