New appointments at Heidelberg SAPS

There are new faces at the Heidelberg SAPS with Capt Lorraine Mkaza and Lizette Furstenburg joining the local police station last month.

Capt Muzikayise Joseph Nkabinde was promoted to Lieut-Col.

Lieut-Col Muzikayise Joseph Nkabinde from Heidelberg Vispol.

Mkaza is in the human resource management position. She joined the police service in 2001 at the provincial office.

In 2007, she was transferred to Vereeniging, and in 2015, she made Kliprivier her home base. She was appointed to Heidelberg this year.

Mkaza lives in Vereeniging but is planning to relocate to Heidelberg. Her duties will include training employees and ensuring their well-being.

Capt Lorraine Mkaza is the new human resource manager at Heidelberg SAPS.

The married mother of three said she loves the environment in Heidelberg.

Furstenburg is an accident administrative officer and also deals with dossier enquiries.

She started her policing career 36 years ago. Her first police base was De Deur Police Station, where she stayed for 18 years, then moved to Vereeniging for four years, Mokopane for three years, Rustenburg for a five-year stint and Krugersdorp for five years before being transferred to Heidelberg in January.

Lizette Furstenburg is an accident administrative officer and deals with dossier enquiries at Heidelberg SAPS.

She has been married to Martinus Furstenburg for 19 years. Their son completed matric last year and will study nature conservation in Bela Bela soon.

Furstenburg said when she was younger, they always drove through Heidelberg and she vowed to one day stay here.

She added that she prefers staying in a small town and not busy places like Johannesburg or Krugersdorp. Heidelberg’s clean streets appeal to her.

Newly promoted Nkabinde is part of the Vispol policing team in Heidelberg. He joined the police in 1990 as a constable in Heidelberg.

He was promoted as captain in 2005 and transferred to Ratanda as Vispol support in 2014. Nkabinde returned to Heidelberg in 2018.

He has been around for 30 years in the Heidelberg area as a police official.

Nkabinde said his philosophy is to always be positive no matter the day or circumstance. He has six children who all stay in KwaZulu-Natal.

Vispol policing has always been his passion. Every crime in Heidelberg is regarded as a priority that needs to be rooted out.

“At times it feels like we are not doing enough to stop crime in its tracks,” he said.

“The turnaround times to capture and prosecute criminals needs to be handled quicker.

“I want Heidelberg to be a crime-free zone.

“We as police officials always rely on the community for good support and communication.

“We are here not for self-enrichment and to ensure justice gets done.”

Nkabinde pleaded with the public to be the eyes and ears of the police. Proper communication between the police and community helps prevent crime.

“We will look at the hijackings and false reporting of it as well. Another area is the blue light gangs that are working in the Heidelberg area,” he said.

“If you are stopped at any time by anyone and you are not sure if they are police officials drive straight to your nearest SAPS. We need the community’s help to stop crime in its tracks.”
