Latest blue plaque awarded

The blue plaque unveiled as part ot the heritage was done on December 10.

The Heidelberg Heritage Association’s Tony Burisch awarded the heritage blue plaque to Jean Venter at 40 HF Verwoerd Street, Heidelberg, on December 10.

Initially, the property belonged to George Kinnear Blyth, who was born on June 14, 1863, in Beaufort West.

George was a wealthy Heidelberger and one of the founding members of the Heidelberg Club.

Blyth’s parents were David Henderson and Sophia Catharina. He had 10 brothers and sisters.

George married Anna Emilie Blyth (née Becker). Blyth died on May 24, 1912, and his grave, with that of his son, Heinie’s, is located in the Heidelberg Kloof Cemetery.

After George’s death, Anna and her family relocated to Ladysmith. Anna died on June 7, 1950.

The current owners, Jean and Marius Venter from Vox Telecom, has been using the property as business premises for nine years.
