Heidelberg Hospital admits doctor injured a newborn during operation

“The doctor was appointed on a contractual basis, which expired in March.”

Heidelberg Hospital admits it is responsible for the six-month-old boy’s cut on his cheek during a C-section operation on March 5.

According to the Gauteng Department of Health’s media liaison officer, Kwara Kekana, the newborn was accidentally cut on the left cheek during the operation.

She said the incident was explained to the mother by the health practitioners.

Kekana added the doctor who did the operation is one of the officially appointed medical officers of Heidelberg Hospital and the Gauteng Department of Health.

“The doctor was appointed on a contractual basis, which expired in March,” said Kekana.

When asked about the family’s request to be compensated for the trauma and pain caused to the child and family, Kekana said the hospital acknowledged the incident and communicated with the client.

However, Dories Magalemele, who is the grandmother of the child, said the hospital is taking advantage of the child’s mother and family.

She said the family will continue to follow up on the matter.

Magalemele previously told Kathorus MAIL she looks after the child since both parents are working. She added that the past six months were very hard for her while watching her grandson in pain all the time.

According to Dories, the child’s mother was not provided with any medication to treat the baby’s wound. The family wants compensation from the hospital for the damage caused to them.
