Team Ekurhuleni is yet to compete against West Rand, Tshwane, Sedibeng and Joburg in the provincial indigenous games on August 28.

Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has confirmed Ekurhuleni has selected a team to participate in the annual provincial indigenous games on August 28.

Participants across the Ekurhuleni region came together and competed in kgati (skipping), dibeke, morabaraba, ncuva, morula, josei, intonga (stick fighting), diketo and khokho.

Nomazwe Ntlokwana of the department said a team of 114 participants were then selected to represent Team West Rand in the upcoming provincial games.

“Team Ekurhuleni will be competing against West Rand, Tshwane, Sedibeng and Joburg in the provincial indigenous games. Team Gauteng will be selected for the upcoming national indigenous games. Team Joburg is still in the process of finalising its regional team,” she said.

In a statement, Ntlokwana said indigenous games have an origin, which is the story behind the invention of the activity or game.

“Indigenous games are aimed at encouraging participants to take pride and embrace these (heritage) activities. These activities used to be a catalyst in sustaining and unifying communities over the years,” said Ntlokwana.

As these games take place during a period where the country is faced with a pandemic, she said regulations are adhered to to ensure the safety of all participants.
