Nigel gymnasts rake in medals

The junior gymnasts of the Nigel Gymnastics Club showcased their talent at their first competition in over a year.

On August 14, the junior gymnasts of the Nigel Gymnastics Club took part in their first competition in over a year at the Ekurhuleni District Artistic Competition in Kempton Park.

“Due to strict Covid-19 protocols, it has been very difficult to have any inter-club competitions,” said Charlene Maritz, head coach of the club.

“But this year, due to a lot of hard work and planning, we were able to host a successful competition.”

Nigel Gymnastics entered 19 gymnasts, all of whom achieved their junior district colours.

“For many of these girls, this was their first competition and the first time on different apparatus at a different venue and I am proud to say they flourished,” Maritz continued.

“All Gymnasts in this level get a medal based on their score; however, our results as a small club are outstanding.”

The following gymnasts finished in the top five of their level and age groups:

• Rodey Senekal: third

• Dahlia Dias: third

• Mieke Esterhuizen: fourth

• Joanika Du Plessis: second

• Rene Vogel: first. She also had the highest score in level two across all age groups.

• Nicke Droskie: fourth

• Vicky Badenhorst: fifth

• Clarize Van Schalkwyk: third

• Suane Matthews: fourth

• Kaylee Visser: fifth

• Haylee Neethling: second.
