Cancer awareness event to showcase support

The organisation will be hosting an event on August 28.

Alra Park Can Over Come (APCOC) is an NPO started in June in an effort to support those who have been affected by cancer.

“We are in essence a cancer support group,” said Jezel Esbend, the secretary of the group.

“We are a NPO that has taken up the task to influence and improve the lives of many people who are undergoing long-term treatment for terminal or life-threatening illnesses.”

The main purpose of this support group is to educate, motivate and encourage the patient and their families.

“Through our initiatives, we would like to provide the community with the necessary information or education in order to detect and/or even prevent some of these debilitating illnesses, while also providing the necessary nutrition, sanitary or medical supplies to already bedridden patients,” Esbend said.

“We would also like to provide home-based care, which includes creating a clean and safe environment, which enable patients to recuperate.

“As well as to create a sense of giving back to the community, where a rehabilitated patient can become a community counsellor or home-based caregiver, based on their experience.”

While the organisation already assists cancer patients with transport and fares needed to take them to relevant hospitals for their treatments, the organisation is still far from achieving what they want to accomplish.

“At this point, we need the assistance of the community at large, including businesses and professionals,” said Esbend. “We are actively looking for potential sponsors to help finance our initiatives.

“Any contributions, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.”

The organisation will be hosting a Woman’s Day event, called Her Story, for the community and explain how they hope to help those in need on August 28 at the Mackenzieville Community Hall at 12:00.
