Pylon structures still being stripped

Pylons located near the Marievale Nature Reserve towards Springs has also been vandalised.

The power outage that affected Nigel and the surrounding communities for almost a week in June might happen again, due to the discovery of more damaged pylons in the Nigel area.

Nigel Community On Patrol members recently apprehended suspects in the Marievale area who had metal, possibly from steel masts, in their possession.

Further investigation led to the discovery of damaged pylons in the area.

“The big challenge is that certain masts are Eskom property and others belong to Ekurhuleni,” said Wollaston Labuschagne, DA ward councillor for Nigel (Ward 88).

“When a suspect is arrested, there must be a plaintiff who can confirm and prove from where the property (metal) originated from in order to obtain a guilty verdict from the court.”

Labuschagne explained and advised that this was the statement made to him by SAPS members.

The apprehended suspects were handed over to Nigel SAPS.
