12-0 win for Cambridge

Cambridge won their last match on the eve of lockdown level four restrictions.

The Cambridge Football Club took on the Nigel Galecticos Football Club on June 29 hours before President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation.

The match was held at the Jim Fouché Stadium with no spectators allowed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The game was described as quality football with the Cambridge lead scorer, striker Boy Mkhonazi, who scored the first four goals of the match.

Cambridge was in possession for most of the first half and entered halftime with a score of 7-0.

The second half saw Cambridge mainly in possession of the ball, which enabled them to score five more goals.
Cambridge won the match with a final score of 12-0.

Their victory also secured the club the number one spot in the league, with four more matches to go.

Due to the adjusted level four restrictions that came into place on the same day as the match, the team is not sure when their remaining four matches will take place.

Ignatius Maphike, who forms part of the coaching staff, feels there is confusion regarding the restrictions and sport in general.

“The closure for sport like rugby and soccer was for schools across the country and not for developmental sports like football associations. There were still various play-offs scheduled before the new restrictions came into play,” he said.

“Our top priority is the safety and health of our team members.

“The team has performed extremely well, but they must keep themselves safe.

“We will determine what the next step for the club is after July 21.”
