Third blue plaque revealed

HEIDELBERG – The third blue plaque for heritage was revealed on May 21 at the Yummy Bar and Restaurant building, which was built before 1900.

During the early 1900s, Voortrekker Street was known as Market Street, as that is where most of the trading used to happen.

One of the shops in old Market Street was a tailor shop.

In those days there were no clothing shops and clothing would have to be made by a tailor or by the mother or grandmother of the household.

Ellis Mitchell Tailor was situated on the premises where Yummy Bar and Restaurant is today.

In subsequent years it became the Central Café, with the Central News Agency having their shop next door.

“I am proud to be the owner of one of the heritage sites,” Henry Peters said.

The original Market Square during the early 1900s.

Henry and his wife, Evelyn, who sponsored the heritage blue plaque, opened the Yummy Bar and Restaurant in December and have included historic pictures of the old Market Square as décor.

The site still has a pressed metal ceiling, which was one of the characteristics of buildings built before 1900.

The next heritage plaque will be erected at noon on May 28 at the Goodwin residence, 1 van der Westhuizen Street.
