Dancing through lockdown

Flow Dance Studio, run by Rain Hyde and Vida Deminey, is a ballet institution that offers professional tuition in classical ballet to children from the age of three through to high school, as well as adults.

Both dance instructors are accredited by the Dance Association of South Africa (DASA).

“Our teachers are dedicated to sharing their love of ballet,” Hyde told the HERAUT.

“Many people in our community will recognise Vida’s name because she has been teaching ballet in Heidelberg for years.

“Though last year’s lockdown was a difficult time for all of our dancers, we are incredibly proud of our students who persevered through the many months of dancing at home in 2020.

“We used online video classes and fun at-home ballet challenges to help them dance. Our students were able to practice their work away from the studio and we, as their instructors, made sure to give them individual feedback through videos as well.

“This also meant that all of our students, ages four and up, were able to dance – and pass – their DASA virtual exams in October, just two months after classes at the studio were able to resume for all students.

“We ended our challenging year with a very successful concert that was enjoyed by both the dancers and their families.

“We are so grateful to be able to come to the studio every week and dance together, especially after a year like 2020. We look forward to all this year has to offer.

“We are already working on this year’s exams in our weekly classes and hope to attend a small competition or Eisteddfod in addition to the DASA exams later this year.”

Hyde believes last year showed how important the studio is to both students and teachers.

“It is a safe space where our students can come and enjoy the beauty of ballet while working on their skills and techniques in this gorgeous dance form,” she added.
