Earth Owl inspires sustainable farming

Sustainable farming was promoted by the company known as Earth Owl, recently.

A group of teenagers recently got the chance to learn more about sustainable farming through the benevolent company known as Earth Owl.

The company took four teenagers to a farm outside of Nigel where they learned valuable skills in sustainable farming.

The company, along with the teens, started their day on the farm at 8am.

During the day, they were taught how to prepare the land for planting, building the plant beds, planting seedlings, laying the mulch and learned how to not over-water the plants.

“It was a really fun day,” said Roché Pepler, one of the co-founders of the company.

“The teens were incredible and a delight to work with. It is wonderful to know that there are young people keen to learn about nature and growing food.

“Our company, Earth Owl, is on a global mission to tackle food security, job creation and skills development. “We are particularly focusing on South Africa as we believe in the value of this country and we are not ready to give up on its beauty and its people.

“Through our efforts, we wish to give the people of this country a fighting chance and bring forth new hope in a county where we have been failed miserably. We believe that through upskilling people within the agricultural sector, we may stand a fighting chance to save South Africa from a falling economy and thereby bring back the hope and trust we all have for this country.

“We hope that we impact the lives of our community and work our way up from there. We aim to inspire the youth to enter into agriculture as this will be the way of the future.

“Seeing that we are currently facing a global situation where food is becoming scarcer, if we don’t act now and start planting fresh organic produce and become more self-sustainable, food prices shortly will become almost impossible to afford.

“We hope that through the people we inspire today, they will pay it forward and inspire those who cross their paths in the future.”

Earth Owl is working closely with organisations such as Khuthaza Foundation who have set up their eco hub in Springs and share a similar focus, being involved in major clean-up projects around Gauteng.

The company also works closely alongside The Wayside Feeding and Development Organization in Alrapark where the organisation provides food kitchens to those who can’t afford a warm meal.

“Funds are always a mission to obtain, any financial donation, time or workers will be appreciated for our endeavours,” Pepler added.

“We are committed to making a difference, no matter how small. If we change the life of one person today, that person may have the potential to change and inspire the lives of thousands of other people in the future.”

The group planted and watered the seedlings once the ground was effectively prepared.
