Alrapark Damduikers tackle Blesbokspruit

Six members of the Alrapark Damduikers Angling Club took to the Blesbokspruit on Saturday.

With the heavy rains of recent weeks, the group used the higher water levels to their advantage.

The group of anglers arrived at the spruit at 5am, intending to stay for the day. They hoped an entire day’s worth of fishing would be worth it in preparation for the year, while also having fun and enjoying nature.

With the increased water level and stronger flow of the river, the group had a tougher-than-normal time trying to catch the big ones.

Members of the club went fishing in preparation for their next outing on February 27.

“We had to use heavy strops and make use of more feed to try and keep the fish in the area,” said Dominic Magalhaes, vice-chairperson of the group.

“There are more fish when the water level is higher, and fish are very active.”

Aldo Clements had the biggest catch of the day with his 6kg carp. Clements also caught the most fish throughout the day. A total of 18 fish were caught.

The fully licensed and registered team of anglers are preparing for their next outing on February 27 at Draaifontein, Vaal Dam.

They are looking forward to catching some big carp and hope the big barbels will bite. The fishing day was described as a huge success by the team. The members stayed on the river until 5pm.

Magalhaes encouraged anyone who enjoys fishing to join the club.

“We are looking for new members and we need sponsorships to take our sport to higher levels and enter more competitions,” Magalhaes concluded.
