No mask or social distancing observed as people queue outside Home Affairs

On January 7, South Africa recorded 844 more deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic and 21 832 new cases were reported.

South Africa is at a weak point in the fight against the pandemic, resulting in the adjusted level three regulation being implemented from December 29, 2020 until January 15, 2021, when it will be reviewed.

The level three regulation stipulates that wearing a mask is compulsory in any public space and social distancing of at least 1.5m must be adhered to to help curb the spread of this disease.

Heidelberg recorded 2 154 cases and 28 deaths since March 2020. In a town of approximately 35 000 residents, this amounts to about six per cent of the population that was infected, based on information that is known.

Some people queueing at the Heidelberg Home Affairs office were spotted wearing no masks and not social distancing.

The rate at which Covid-19 cases rise daily is alarming, yet the public still does not comply with the set regulations.

Concerned residents driving past the Home Affairs office on several occasions noticed that people queue for hours from the entrance in Begeman Street and around the corner in Ueckerman Street, some without masks and not social distancing.

Although the police have to enforce the regulations, it is also up to the public to be responsible and to do their part in combatting the virus.

Turning a blind eye and not adhering to the protocols only worsens the spread of the virus.
