The City of Ekurhuleni, with a population of four million people, turned 20 on December 5.

On December 5 the City of Ekurhuleni celebrated its 20th birthday.

Ekurhuleni was established when 11 administrations and nine towns were amalgamated in 2000.

“The journey to establishing an effective and efficient local government started with the mammoth task of having to merge the different administrative systems responsible for governance and service delivery in the nine towns and 17 townships,” said Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, divisional head of communication and media relations for the City of Ekurhuleni.

In the year of its inception the City of Ekurhuleni had a population of 2.5 million. Over the 20 years since, the population has grown to four million people.

“CoE is a major economic and social role-player in South Africa by means of its strong industrial characteristics and contribution to the national economy, and the size and extent of the population that is reside within its administrative boundaries. The City continues to strengthen its infrastructure so that it can handle the ever-growing population.”
