DA says wrongful electric cut-offs must stop

Ekurhuleni must immediately cease wrongful electricity cut-offs.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has noted with concern the growing number of complaints by frustrated residents who are wrongfully disconnected by the CoE and has called for the immediate halting on wrongful cut-offs.

According to the DA, during hard lockdown, the city was unable to conduct physical meter readings and residents were charged interim readings on their accounts.

For many, these interim readings were excessively high and some residents have complained that their municipal accounts tripled in a month.

The party called for the suspension of wrongful termination notices until the city corrects and rectifies its over-billing and interim readings on accounts.

Residents and businesses of the city have had to endure much hardship during lockdown, with many suffering massive losses of income.

DA leader in Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell said: “The very least the city can do is show compassion towards its people and ensure that they are billed correctly for services rendered before terminating services.”
