Killing of metro police officer tears MMC’s heart out

The officer died after gunmen entered his home and shot him on September 20

The MMC for Community Safety, Clr Phaladi Mmoko, said he is saddened by the shooting of one of the metro’s dedicated law enforcement officers, Const Mopi Johannes Matloa.

“It is said suspects entered his home in Ivory Park and opened fire on him. He was rushed to Zamokuhle Hospital, where he subsequently died.”

A case of murder was registered at Ivory Park Police Station and authorities are urging community members who might have information which can assist to track down the responsible gunmen to contact them.

“The MMC and EMPD are hurt. This was a police officer whose entire devotion was to serve and protect the lives in the communities that he served,” said Mmoko.

“EMPD shall not rest until the killers of Matloa are brought to book, neither shall we surrender to criminality,” said Mmoko.

The MMC conveyed his sincere condolences to the Matloa family, the chief of police and EMPD management, all the officers and immediate colleagues for this loss.

Matloa started as a traffic warden in 2008 and went on to train as a metro police officer in 2009. He was then deployed to the Edenvale precinct until 2015 when he joined the Northern Region FRU (First Respond Team).
