DA demand answers over allocation of Obed Nkosi houses

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is calling on the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Lebogang Maile, to provide clarity with regards to the process used to select beneficiaries for the allocation of the Lesedi Local Municipality's RDP houses at Obed Nkosi in Ratanda.

This follows the allocation of 60 units in Obed Nkosi by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements on August 13. According to Charity Moyo (GPL media and issues specialist: DA) the party is inundated with complaints from residents who allege that people who were not listed as beneficiaries, did in fact receive a unit, while rightful beneficiaries who had been on the list for years, were overseen in the process of allocation.

“Considering that the Gauteng housing unit waiting list is plagued with corruption, these allegations are serious and we do not view them lightheartedly,” Moyo said.

“A lack of transparency of the Gauteng housing unit waiting list has made the system vulnerable to corruption and manipulation. It is high time that the department conducts an audit of all the beneficiaries before allocating the houses to ensure that they are the rightful beneficiaries,” Moyo concluded.

The DA has called on MEC Maile to conduct an audit on people who were allocated the houses to obtain clarity as to whether they are indeed the rightful beneficiaries and if not, who the rightful beneficiaries might be.

Moyo said that in the event of it being found there are people who were not duly registered as the official beneficiaries and therefore unjustly allocated a house, arrests must follow to eradicate corruption within the department.
