Criminal activities soaring

Capt Madeleine von Wielligh (SAPS Heidelberg spokesperson) warned that there is an increase in electronic gate motor theft.

Illicit cigarettes were among the items seized by the police during a planned law-enforcement execution recently.

She advised the public to be vigilant and place a safety clamp over gate motors. Since July, a total of at least 12 gate motors were reported stolen. According to Willem Sprong (Sector leader CPF Jordaan Park) four electric gate motors were stolen on August 26 in Jordaan Park alone. With the help of the CPF patrollers, patrols were intensified.

A break-in occurred at the offices of Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie (SAVF) on August 26. Thieves cut through the palisade and removed a burglar bar from the window to gain access to the offices. Five computers were stolen and all the office desk-drawers were emptied. This is the second burglary at the SAVF this year.

Sgt Getrude Makhale (corporate communication Sedibeng District) reported that during the execution of planned law-enforcement activities, they managed to arrest 15 suspects for various crimes that were committed such as possession of drugs, possession of illicit cigarettes, selling liquor without a license and interfering with police while executing their duties. Illicit cigarettes, a gambling machine, drugs and dagga were seized. During tuck shop visits when monitoring compliance, police issued fines valued at R5 000 for non-compliance and further seized items such as car oil, cell phone starter packs and pain-tablets.

A 35-year old drove on the N3 highway from Durban to Johannesburg on August 27 and stopped at Harrismith where he picked up a pedestrian. After the vehicle came to a stop, near Heidelberg, three males approached the driver. One suspect shot the driver in his leg. They tried to take the vehicle from the owner but the key broke off in the ignition. The suspects left the vehicle and ran away after taking the victim’s wallet with cash and cellphone. The victim was taken to Heidelberg Hospital. A case of attempted murder was opened.

In another incident on August 27, a 40-year-old male was hijacked on the N3 highway after picking up a pedestrian. Victim was forced into the back of his vehicle where he was tied up and forced to give the pin numbers of his bank cards. The suspects then transferred money out of his accounts and escaped with the victim’s motor vehicle and cellphone. After the suspects fled, the victim managed to get assistance and reported the matter. The vehicle was fitted with a tracker system and was recovered in the Kliprivier area.
