Proteas Windies tour up in the air

Proteas head coach Mark Boucher says he is not sure the national men's team will be able to tour the West Indies as planned.

The men in green have already had a tour cancelled in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with their planned visit to Sri Lanka no longer going ahead.
They were scheduled to travel to the Caribbean for two Test matches and five T20 Internationals in late July, but that too now looks impossible according to the former wicketkeeper.

“I don’t know if those tours are going to go ahead or they’ve been officially cancelled. It doesn’t look likely that we’ll be going ahead with those tours,” he said.

“Things are up in the air at the moment. We’re waiting for a couple of teams to get back to us and we’re also waiting for the ICC for the IPL announcement and all that kind of stuff.

“We’ve planned as much as we can‚ but we’ll have to see when the ICC makes the announcements.

“The IPL is a big tournament and I think they may try to have it at the end of the year. Hopefully we can start working on that‚ but it doesn’t look likely that we’ll go to the West Indies,” Boucher added.

The West Indies squad is currently in England, where they are engaged in a three-match Test series against the hosts, which is scheduled to end on 28 July.

South Africa’s tour to the Caribbean would have seen them take to the field against the Windies from 23 July, and that is unlikely to happen.

The Proteas are also looking to host India in August, following their abandoned limited-overs tour back in March.

The local cricket season begins on 18 July with the innovative Solidarity Cup pitting three teams against one another in a single game.
