SCAM ALERT – beware of Grant-in-Aid fraudster

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has issued a warning to members of the public to be aware of Grant-in-Aid scam, which is carried by a person claiming to be a CoE employee.

The CoE said in a press release on May 25, it has been inundated with complaints from residents who are receiving calls from the scammer WHO is soliciting money to allegedly fast-track their Grant-in-Aid applications.

“The fraudster who claims to be involved in Grant-in-Aid adjudication is reportedly taking various amounts of money from applicants and recite their personal information contained in their applications to gain their trust,” CoE spokesperson Themba Gadebe warned.

He reiterated that all Grant-in-Aid applications are handled and processed free of charge and that no money should be paid to any person in respect of same.

The following pointers provided below may assist to differentiate scammers from legit communication by the CoE:

  • The name should read: City of Ekurhuleni and not Ekurhuleni Municipality;
  • Landlines in the CoE have the 999 prefix;
  • The email address for staff is: persons’name.surname@ekurhuleni.gov.za and not XXX@ekurhuleni-gov.org or any other variation

The City urges companies and individuals to be vigilant and to verify information on its website. (www.ekurhuleni.gov.za).
