Intoxicated driver arrested on route to work

A 35-year-old man was arrested for contravention of the Disaster Management Act National Lockdown regulations.

According to Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the arrest was made on May 22 (at 23:45) when Sgt Vusumuzi Zondo and Const Scharoll Le Grange were patrolling the area around the R103 and R550 outside of town.

“A VW Polo drove past the patrolling officers at a very high speed, ignored a stop sign and continued driving along even after he was signaled by the police officers to pull over,” Capt Tshilate said.

After back-up assistance was activated, Sgt Vhahangwele Mmbi and Const Mashumo soon joined in and the speeding driver was finally apprehended.

“When the police members conducted verification of the suspect’s movement during the curfew, they detected the smell of alcohol. He also murmured when he talked and was unable to stand up straight. It was evident that he was under the influence of alcohol and when the police searched his car, they discovered an open bottle of bee,” Capt Tshilate said.

It was later established that the suspect was on his way to work at the Coca Cola Valpre Water factory at Lagerspoort, where he holds a supervisor position.

He was arrested and according to Capt Tshilate, detained in Tsakane Police Station.

He is expected to appear in Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.
