Easing of lockdown regulations sees spike in crime in Nigel

SAPS Nigel have been busy the past week, as several incidents of crime were reported since May 14.

A suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he assaulted a police officer in MacKenzieville on May 14.

According to Sgt Nellie Dwaba (spokesperson), two police offers were patrolling the area when they encountered a group of men in the street without wearing face masks. When they confronted the men as to why there were out in the street, one of them aggressively leaped forward and hit one of the officers in the fact.

“A scuffle broke out and the suspect managed to grab the officer’s fire-arm and hit him on the head. He then aimed at the officer’s face and attempted to fire, but in the process they both fell to the ground where the second officer managed to take control over the situation,” Sgt Dwaba said.

The suspect is expected to appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court this week.

Police are investigating a house robbery which occurred in David Wolf Street on May 15. The robbery reportedly took place after three men in a white Audi approached the house owner while he was in the garden.

“It was reported that two of the suspects entered the property through a small opening in the gate and made their way inside the house, where they demanded the safe keys from the house owner,” Sgt Dwaba said.

The suspects made off with a hunting rifle, ammunition, cellphones and jewelry. No arrests have been made.

A case of theft was reported to the police after an incident which occurred at a filling station in Third Street on May 14.

A robbery also took place at a business situated at Rietpoort Farm on May 15, when two African males entered the property and tied the victim up inside one of the rooms. The suspects fled the scene with numerous items including television sets, machinery and bedding. No arrests have been made.

A Toyota Etios was stolen in the parking area of a local bank in Kerk Street on May 15. Another Toyota Etios was reported stolen from the parking area at The Angelo Mall later the same day. According to Sgt Dwaba, the victim said he attended to shopping centre with his Toyota Etios around 15:05. When he returned to his car after around 30 minutes, it was no longer where he had parked it.

A business robbery also occurred at a clothing outlet in Hendrik Verwoerd Street on May 17. According to Sgt Dwaba, two men (pretending to be customers) entered the store around 12:00, but one of them was immediately recognised by the security guard as having robbed the store previously. However, the suspects pulled out fire-arms before the security guard could alert the police and everybody inside the store were told to lie down on the floor, while the suspects filled their bags with cellphones, clothes and cash. No arrests have been made.

Police arrested a suspect for possession of drugs in Lavers Street on May 15.

A suspect was arrested in Alrapark and charged with robbery, after a female victim was robbed in Lemoen Street on May 16. The suspect is expected to appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court this week.
