Level 4 of lockdown keeps SAPS busy

SAPS members are continuing to fight crime and bring perpetrators to justice.

According to Sgt Nellie Dwaba (police spokesperson) a suspect was arrested and charged with theft, after a break-in which occurred at a business premises in Smuts Avenue, Jameson Park on May 2.

Another suspect was arrested on Alberton Road on May 2 and charged with bribery, after she offered to pay a police member R500 to let her go.

A motor vehicle accident between two vehicles on the R42 between Heidelberg and Nigel on May 2, claimed the lives of both drivers. According to Sgt Dwaba the head-on collision occurred around 19:00. No other vehicles were involved.

An attempted armed robbery occurred at a supermarket in Hendrik Verwoerd Street on May 4, where the suspect threatened staff members with a fire-arm. The suspect is an African male who spoke Zulu. He was wearing a black cap and was later joined by two suspects, who ordered staff members into a office where they were searched and robbed of cellphones and cash.
In Devon, a total of 23 people have been arrested in various Covid-19 operations since May 1.

According to Sgt Sbongile Ndlela (SAPS Devon Corporate Communications) suspects were arrested for offences which include the contravention of a protection order, house break-ins, theft, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of copper and contravening the Disaster Management Act.

“The suspects are expected to appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court and may face criminal charges and/or fines,” Sgt Ndlela said.

She added that a Covid-19 operation led by MEC Faith Mazibuko from the department of community safety, ward councillor Mashele Lukhele, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic contributed to the successful arrests.

SAPS Duduza have arrested a total of 35 people in terms of the Disaster Management Act since May 1 and also one suspect for house break-in, one for theft, one for assault, one for business burglary and three suspects for possession of drugs.
