What to when your Sassa card is lost/stolen

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced an increase in the number of people switching to, or choosing the new SASSA card as an option for payment of their social grants, but what can you do if your card is lost or stolen?

SASSA encourages beneficiaries who lost their cards and ID documents, to immediately report it to the nearest department of home affairs in order to obtain a temporary ID.

SASSA Gauteng spokesperson Nandi Mosia said that after attainment of such, beneficiaries will have to visit their nearest SASSA office with the temporary ID and a sworn statement/affidavit from SAPS, confirming the card is lost or stolen.

“The first lost card will be replaced for free, but thereafter a replacement fee of R26 will be instituted and will be deducted from their grant money. Replacement of a lost or stolen card can be done at any SASSA office near you,” Mosia said.

Beneficiaries are however, urged to keep their cards and pin safe and protected and to report any problems they may encounter, to their nearest SASSA office.
