Ratanda Christmas lunch for those in need

Student cares for her community with the help of Heidelberg Mall.

Showing her love for the underprivileged in her community, Mathapelo Mokoena hosted a Christmas lunch on December 20 at the Christ Centered Faith Church in Extension 7, Ratanda. This 22-year-old student from the University of South Africa is a reborn Christian who (with her project Here to Serve) wanted to extend a helping hand to those in need.

“I am born and bred in Ratanda and had a sense of purpose to cater for the physical needs of underprivileged families, orphans, homeless individuals and giving hope to drug addicts, abused women and children. My project focuses mainly on the development and well-being of the community. This project is inspired by God to extend His love and compassion towards other people – no matter how dehumanised, broken, abandoned and hopeless they may feel,” Mathapelo explained.

In order to host the project’s first Christmas lunch and handing out food parcels, she asked the help of local businesses and institutions and Heidelberg Mall came on board.

“We thought this a worthy project and have much appreciation for Mathapelo’s efforts. We came on board and this is one of our ways to plow back into our community,” Lebogang Legwale (centre manager) of Heidelberg Mall said.

The day was filled with food, games, engaging sessions and singing performances.
