Green thumb learners rewarded

Thirty finalists from Sithokomele Primary and Boneha Primary School attended the prize giving of this year’s Heidelberg Mall Cangro Project.

The project took place on November 21 and was attended by educators, parents of learners and the community. Cangro is a proudly South African, educational innovation that teaches children to grow food upside down. Cangro aims to empower children with knowledge, skills and capacity to successfully nurture and care for their very own upside-down tomato plant.

This teaches the children to care for themselves and their environment. The prize giving included a top three prize placement which included the ‘I CAN’ and Gardener of the Year awards.

“A total of 236 Grade 3 learners each received an upside-down tomato plant which they nurtured over three months. Prizes were awarded to the 30 finalists who successfully grew and nurtured their plants,” said Lebogang Legwale (Heidelberg Mall: centre manger).

Learners and educators were treated with a visit from Lesedi the Lion and enjoyed a lunch after the ceremony. The third annual Cangro Project at Heidelberg Mall will take place in September 2020.
