Be vigilant, warns security company

An armed robbery occurred at a house in Rensburg (Heidelberg) on October 1 and according to the homeowner, she was certain the suspects wore reflective jackets similar to those that contractor workers wear.

In another instance, an intruder was mistaken for a contract worker and let into a property at Mayberry Park. He was later arrested by the police and charged with attempted robbery.

“These incidents highlight the importance of remaining vigilant when contractors are working at your premises,” Linda Goodenough, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT said in a statement.

The intruder unscrupulously walked into the property when the owner’s father arrived and asked for the bathroom. Thinking he was a contract worker, the owner’s father let him in but kept an eye on the bathroom, but the intruder made his way into the bedroom. When questioned on what he was doing there he didn’t respond but walked into the kitchen saying he was waiting for his colleagues to arrive. The owner’s father then called his daughter who in return phoned Fidelity ADT. Contract workers on site, however, denied knowing the intruder and he was subsequently arrested.

Property owners are particularly vulnerable when contractors are on-site and need to remain vigilant.

“Opening your house to contractors can definitely expose you to risk,” Goodenough said.
