PRESS RELEASE: Ongoing Riots in Ratanda

The Municipality has grown an immense concern over the riots that are happening in and around Ratanda. As these protesters have also went on a looting rampage and have put innocent lives in danger. As a result of this unrest, the municipality is unable to provide service delivery to some areas.

We understand that the protest is about the disconnection of electricity from residents that have not complied with their payments. However, the municipality has tried its level best to reach out to the aggrieved residents and conducted a number of meetings about the payment of electricity with the residents.

It must be noted that the Municipality is attending to these individual cases. The protesting residents have informed the Executive Mayor that they want to have an engagement with Eskom and not the Municipality.

We would like to inform residents that all lawful enforcement agencies have been activated to help with the situation at hand. We would like to urge our residents to be safe during these ongoing protests.
