Police warns motorists to be cautious of hijacking syndicate

Heidelberg Police are warning travellers to be especially cautious of a hijacking syndicate that is operating on the N3.

According to Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate (spokesperson) of Heidelberg Police Station, the hijackers seem to target luxury company vehicles traveling from KwaZulu-Natal towards Johannesburg. Three incidents have been reported around Heidelberg in the past two weeks.

The modus operandi of the suspects is to have two women or a man and woman pretend to be hitch hikers somewhere in KwaZulu-Natal. As soon as they are picked up, they send information to their accomplices about the vehicle they are travelling in and their position.

When they get to Heidelberg, the accomplices use a white vehicle with a blue light to force the driver to stop. They are then confronted by the armed hijackers, who demand that they get out of their vehicle and are left next to the road.

Captain Tshilate says the hotspot areas are at the following off-ramps from the N3: Benoni, Jacobs Street and Standerton. They are also operating on the N3 in the vicinity of Heidelberg Airfield and Spookbrug.

The following cases were reported since June 12: A Ford Ranger was hijacked on June 12 at 19:50 in the vicinity of the airfield; a Mercedes Benz was hijacked on the 13th at 18:20 and a Toyota Fortuner was hijacked on June 19 at 18:15 also next to the airfield.

Anyone with information on the suspects can phone Heidelberg Police Station Commander on 082 300 0016 or the patrol vehicles on 071 675 7396, 071 675 7295, 071 675 7292, 071 675 7296 or 071 675 7294.
