Suspect activity near Oos Street

Overgrown vacant stands become hiding place for suspects

An intruder entered a yard in Oos Street on May 24 around 10:00. It is not the first time that the burglar has been caught by security guards and residents attempting to steal.

For the past few months, residents of Oos Street have been experiencing multiple males scouting the area. According to Fritz Els (resident of Oos Street), thieves steal metal from Transnet’s premises that is situated near Oos Street, and then they hide in the field across the street, or on nearby properties.

Els told HERAUT that his dogs were barking late on May 24. His son went out to check whether everything was fine. He told his father that he saw a figure running away. Els went out to check for himself when he heard something. He looked over the wall and found a security guard from Transnet who told him that a burglar was on their property. There was at the time another security guard who went around the house to prevent the intruder from escaping.

After they found the intruder, he told Els that his arm hurts and that he wanted scrap metal that he could sell for money. “At the time, I couldn’t find anything on him that he might have taken from the property,” Els said.

Authorities were not able to arrest him, because he did not have any stolen goods in his possession. Colonel Amanda Viljoen (Heidelberg SAPS station commander) cautions residents to be vigilant and report suspect activity or persons to the Heidelberg SAPS sector vehicles.
