Xavier Boisgontier, Managing Director for Alstom Southern Africa and CEO of Alstom Ubunye said: “Alstom is proud to be part of the development of rail transportation through our South African joint venture companies, Alstom Ubunye and the Gibela Rail Transport Consortium.  Through our presence in Ekurhuleni we are committed to create jobs and support social investment projects in local communities. We are aware that we must invest in our youth – as they will lead us in the future. Without love, education and support this would not be possible and this is especially true for vulnerable children.”

Alstom Ubunye was created in 2016 as a 51% joint venture with local partners. The 80 000m2 factory based in Nigel, is using Alstom technology and expertise with many teams being trained in Alstom facilities globally. This factory has a long history of rail in South Africa and has been involved in building trains for the country during the past 40 years. Since its formation the manufacturing facility has been undergoing extensive transformation and modernisation to reinforce its activities in rail manufacturing.

Alstom Ubunye, a South African Rail company, is committed to the support of socio-economic development, development of local skills and supporting the local rail industry over a very long term.

This year, The Alstom Foundation is funding another project in Nigel: an after-school and life skills project with two local primary schools – Alra Park Primary and Happiness Primary School. The goal is to help 200 vulnerable children affected by AIDS to improve their performance in school and acquire basic life skills.
