Maths achievers reconised

Nigel Rotary Club embarked on a "Maths Incentive Scheme" for learners of two high schools in Nigel, Hoƫrskool John Vorster and Alra Park Secondary School, three years ago.

For two Grade 10 learners of Alra Park Secondary School Thobile Monamodi and Joshua Parsons, hard work paid off when they won first and second place in Nigel Rotary Clubā€™s School Awards for Maths. Thobile won first place, which is R2000. ā€œI cannot describe the feeling I have, it still feels unreal and I am very proud,ā€ she said.

ā€œThis shows that hard work and perseverance pays off,ā€ said Joshua who won second prize of R1000. ā€œI am giving some of the money to my mother and the rest I will save up,ā€ he added.

Nigel Rotary Club embarked on a “Maths Incentive Scheme” for learners of two high schools in Nigel, HoĆ«rskool John Vorster and Alra Park Secondary School, three years ago. The scheme commences at Grade 9 level and continues through to Grade 12.

Nigel Rotary Club recognises learners that have improved the best from the previous academic year to the present one. The scheme starts looking at learners in grade 9 and at the end of the year they look at what their maths result was in grade 8 to determine what percentage improvement is achieved in grade 9, if any. The learners that have shown the best improvement from grade 8 to grade 9 are awarded for the best improved and the runner up.

Nigel Rotary Club does not consider the best achievers overall, because they are doing well on their own. They want to incentivise learners to embrace maths as a subject and study it well, because maths is a subject that will help them academically and in life after their studies.

Nigel Rotary Club started this initiative three years ago, every year they progress to include the next grade. They started with grade 9 over 8, the second year they added 10 over 9 and then 11 over 10. This year they are looking at 12 over 11 as well. Thus two learners are awarded in grade 9, two more in grade 10, two more in grade 11, and finally one overall in grade 12.

The prizes are as follows: in grade 9, 10 and 11 they have two learners, one best (R2000), one runner up (R1000) per grade. In grade 12 Nigel Rotary Club will only award the best overall with a laptop.

Nigel Rotary Club believes that by implementing the scheme and encouraging learners to study maths, this will not only benefit the learners in whatever occupation they may follow, but will also ultimately be to the benefit of South Africaā€™s future.
