Volkswagen R rally for SPCA

For the animals at Heidelberg SPCA, May 5 was a special day as 55 Volkswagen Rs came from Bedfordview with much needed supplies that the drivers themselves collected.

R Club SA is an innovative car rally group that does charity runs once a month. This month Heidelberg SPCA received these goods.

R Club SA was initiated by Victor Jardim (former Heidelberg resident) on a Whatsapp group with four other friends. It has since grown in the past year to a whopping 350 members including a branch in Namibia with 30 members. Once a month the club comes together for a charity in favour of animals, to give back to the community.

Anybody can join the R Club, as long as they drive a Volkswagen R range car of course. The members are from all walks of life. The youngest member is 18 and their oldest is a retired school principal of 70.

“We are extremely strict on our runs. We have specific rules in place and never exceed the speed limits,” said Jardim. “We hope that more car clubs will follow our initiative and do charity work and give back to society,” he added.

Heidelberg SPCA was grateful for the donations of cat and dog food, blankets, beds and various other items and a cash donation for the shelter.

“The SPCA is reliant on donations from the public to help house and feed our animals. This charitable group has taken a burden off our shoulders,” Donna Gertenbach from the SPCA said.

To join R Club SA, Jardim can be phoned on 072 313 9376. For any donations towards Heidelberg SPCA, visit the kennels at 1 Retief Street. They can be phoned during office hours (08:00 to 15:00 weekdays and 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays) on 071 994 9960.
