Feather in the cap for nursing staff
International Nurses’ Day is a very important day for the nursing staff of Life Suikerbosrand Hospital.
The nursing staff of Life Suikerbosrand Hospital gathered in die reception area for the celebration of this significant day on May 12. Celebrations started with a prayer by Frieda Daschner, a staff member at the hospital.
Sr Cordelia Wilmot (Unit Manager of the Paediatric and Surgical ward) welcomed all the nurses as well as the first speaker, Sr Anna-Marie Lengton (nurse manager) to the celebration. Lengton gave a heart warming speech about what it means to be a nurse.
“A nurse is the advocate and warrior of the patient. We need to speak up for them and fight for them,” she said.
She encouraged her fellow colleagues to be an example to the community by focusing on hand hygiene.
Dr Thinus Kruger (general practitioner) then talked about appreciation towards nurses. He thanked the nurses for their hard work and commitment towards their patients.
After the speeches Sr Ilana de Wet (Infection prevention specialist) led the nurses and they all recited their nurses’ pledge. The celebration ended with other staff members of the hospital (non-nursing) doing a guard of honour with lit candles in their hands.
