WATCH: Security guard wounded, hijacked during MacKenzieville shooting

Exclusive footage of botched robbery

A security guard was wounded at 23:45 in MacKenzieville on March 25 when three suspects opened fire at his vehicle.

Simon Mpondwana of Monitor 24 Security was sitting at his checkpoint in Ghandi Road when he observed the suspects in the distance. The gunmen suddenly opened fire and shattered his window. One of the bullets struck Mpondwana  in the upper right arm – missing his vital organs.

According to Deon Pretorius, owner of Monitor 24, Mpondwana was issued with both a lethal and non-lethal firearm and that the suspects never discovered the real McCoy.

After  taking the non lethal weapon, the suspects jerked  Mpondwana out of his patrol car and beat him. They then forced him back into the vehicle and drove off with him to Snake Park in Alrapark, Nigel where they robbed him of his personal belongings.

They took his cash, cellphone and bullet proof vest.

The Monitor 24 control room then tracked Mpondwana’s whereabouts using the GPS coordinates of the vehicle’s  dash-cam, but by the time they reached the secluded township location the gunmen had already fled from the scene.

“The lethal weapon which was in Mpondwana’s possession was fortunately never discovered by the perpetrators,” Pretorius confirmed.

Nigel SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Senzagakhona Mohale,  confirmed the incident and that a case of attempted murder is being investigated.

Mpondwana was rushed to the Suikerbosrand Hospital in Heidelberg. He was released earlier today (March 26) and is recovering at home.
