Mackenzieville Ext 2 housing project still in limbo

It has been four years since the Conditions of Township Establishment were approved by the City of Ekurhuleni’s City Planning Department.

Yet the MacKenzieville Housing Project is again at a standstill. Furthermore, there is immense uncertainty regarding the beneficiaries of the approximately 600 RDP houses.

At the start of the current Council term in 2016, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina committed to building 100 000 houses before the end of his term in 2021. The CoE Human Settlements Department has failed to complete 600 houses for this housing project in four years – how will Mayor Masina fulfil his promise of building 100 000 houses by 2021?

According to Wollaston Labuschagne: DA ward councillor in Ekurhuleni, a number of residents in Alra Park and MacKenzieville have been waiting many years for decent housing and sadly, the current ANC administration will make them wait even longer. Labuschagne says that he requested the intervention of the MMC of Human Settlements – Cllr Lesiba Mpya, asking him to visit the project and deal with the sluggish project progress. To date, MMC Mpya has failed to correspond with Labuschagne.

“I have also submitted numerous questions to Council regarding this project, and the only answer I have received from the MMC is that “an application has been submitted to City Planning in terms of the department delegation to relax building lines and servitudes and is awaiting City Planning responses”. This has been the same story for months now. The bottom line is that the ANC and its officials are sitting on their hands and refusing to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni,” Labuschagne said.

Interestingly, 460 subsidy applications were recently submitted to, and processed by the Gauteng Human Settlements Department, and 193 of those applications have been approved thus far. “I have requested the list of the approved subsidy applications and MMC Mpya refuses to make it available. If the ANC have nothing to hide, why will they not make these lists available to Ward Councillors,” Labuschagne asked.

“I wish I had better feedback for the Nigel residents that have applied for RDP houses. However, this is once again proof that the current ANC Mayoral Committee is just not up to the task of running this City. My plea to all registered voters in Ward 88 is to seriously consider whom they will vote for in the upcoming elections,” he concluded.
