The MMC for Community in the City of Ekurhuleni Cllr Vivienne Chauke urged roadusers to ensure that they obey the rules of the road and to be courteous to fellow roadusers during this holiday period in an effort to reduce the road carnage that normally occurs during the festive season. This passionate and earnest plea she made during the launch of a safer festive season campaign that took place on Tuesday, 11 December on N3 southbound between Grey Avenue onramp and Heidelberg turnoff.
With the looming industrial shut down, closing of schools, long road trips to holiday destinations, this period has high traffic volumes with revelers prone to high alcohol consumption leading to vulnerability to crashes, it is essential that we all do the right things and contribute to the reduction of avoidable crashes that are normally accompanied by unpleasant ramifications Cllr Chauke added.
The City of Ekurhuleni EMPD, EMS members and the Gauteng Traffic Police together with the Gauteng Department of Education officials distributed pamphlets on road safety, dangers of substance abuse and domestic abuse and motorists wished a safe and enjoyable holiday period.
Although the objective of the launch was educational, seventy-one citations were issued for various offences, three vehicles discontinued, two persons arrested for fraudulent documents and possession of dagga during the roadblock which took place between 9am and midday. Over sixty law enforcement officers stopped more than eight-hundred vehicles in the process.
