Let the blood start flowing

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has announced that its blood stock levels are currently critically low and by November 14, a total of 1 764 lives were at risk.

Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation. For this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks.

Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

The SANBS aims to collect an average of 3000 units of blood every day nationally. It is through planned, sustainable blood drives at companies, organisations and institutions that they are able to achieve this collection target. SANBS will be hosting two local blood drives this month:

  • the Heidelberg Blood Drive, which will take place from 10:00 until 15:00 at Heidelberg Mall (parking lot) on November 25; and
  • the Nigel Blood Drive which will take place from 10:00 until 14:00 at Consol Glass in Visagie Road, Pretoriusstad, on November 30.

For more information, visit the SANBS website at www.sanbs.org.za or phone them on 0800 11 9031.
