Delivery van hijacked in front of Nigel business

The suspects sped off but after driving for a few hundred metres, they suddenly stopped in the road and were joined by another gang of robbers who reportedly followed them in a black Audi and white Nissan NP200 bakkie.

NIGEL – A private company delivery vehicle transporting hundreds of business parcels, was hijacked in Van Riebeeck Street on October 16.

Police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba said the incident occurred at around 14:00 and although the delivery van was later recovered in Rhodes Avenue, the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of boxes, the contents and value of which are yet to be determined.

“The driver told police he first confirmed a delivery address with a local business and while walking back towards the van to collect the parcels, he was approached by an African man wearing jeans and a black T-shirt. The man allegedly produced a firearm and demanded the driver to hand over the keys, his weapon and money. A second suspect appeared and both the driver and passenger were locked in the back of the van,” Sgt Dwaba said.

The suspects sped off but after driving for a few hundred metres, they suddenly stopped in the road and were joined by another gang of robbers who reportedly followed them in a black Audi and white Nissan NP200 bakkie.

After off-loading hundreds of parcels into the vehicles, the suspects fled the scene. A construction worker who had witnessed the robbery, came to the victims’ aid and opened the back of the van to free the men. Police soon arrived at the scene in Rhodes Avenue, where they found both victims (unscathed) as well as the delivery van.

The suspects are still at large and Sgt Dwaba confirmed that cases of carjacking and armed robbery are being investigated by the police.
