Nigel Crime Report 23 to 30 September

Police are investigating an attempted hijacking which occurred on the R42 between Jameson Park and Nigel on September 23.
According to police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba, the incident occurred around 10:00 when the victim was allegedly driving towards Nigel in a Ford Ranger bakkie. He told police that he was approached by a vehicle (Nissan) from behind and when it started flashing its lights. Assuming the driver needed assistance.

He immediately pulled off the road, upon which three unknown men made their way towards his bakkie. One of them switched off the engine, grabbed the keys and forced the victim to move over. When they reached the Vetsak bridge outside Nigel, the victim allegedly managed to pull the handbrake, causing the bakkie to veer off. The victim claimed that when the bakkie came to a stop, he struggled with the suspect and managed to reach for his firearm which was in the glove compartment. A struggle ensued and the suspect reportedly took control over the firearm and fired several shots at the victim, who had meanwhile stabbed the victim in the shoulder with a sharp object.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene, leaving the victim with gunshot wounds to both legs. Police arrived and after being treated by emergency personnel on the scene, the victim was later transported to a nearby hospital. No arrests have been made.

A burglary occurred at a business in Fifth Avenue, Vorsterskroon on September 25.

Another burglary occurred at a house in Phil Robinson Street on September 26.
A bicycle, house keys and car keys (valued at around R10 000) were reported stolen.

Police are also investigating a burglary which occurred at a house in Krisante Street on September 26.
A television, kitchen utensils, microwave oven, laptop, car keys, jewellery, cellphones and a tablet (valued at around R32 000) were reported stolen.

An armed robbery occurred in Daisy Street, Jameson Park on September 28.
According to Sgt Dwaba, the victim reported that around 11:50 he withdrew around R30 000 from a bank at The Angelo Mall for the purposes of paying Lobola. After driving back to Jameson Park, he stopped at a residence in Daisy Street where a silver Ford Focus pulled up behind him. Three armed men allegedly took the money from him and fled the scene within minutes. No arrests have been made.

Two suspects were arrested for being in possession of and dealing in drugs.
The arrest took place in Fig Avenue, Alrapark on September 28 when two patrolling metro police officers followed up on a tip off from a community member. The suspects (aged 15 and 20 years respectively) were found in possession of 68 ziplock bags of Cat and 13 ziplock bags of ‘rock blocks’ with a street value of around R32 000. Police also seized R650 cash. They were charged with dealing in illicit substances and are expected to appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court soon.

A car (Toyota Fortuner) was reported stolen at Picanha in Springs Road on September 30.
The incident occurred around 13:50 while the owner of the vehicle had lunch at the restaurant.

A burglary occurred at a car dealership in Hendrik Verwoerd Street on September 30.
Four laptops, a camera and a television were reported stolen. Upon further investigation, the business owner noted that six vehicles were stolen from the showroom. The roll-up door had been jacked open. Police discovered that the wires of the alarm system had been cut and the perpetrators gained access through a hole cut in the roof. The value of the stolen items amounts to around R50 000 and the total value of the stolen cars to over R2 million. No arrests have been made.

A carjacking occurred on the N3 freeway towards the Jacobs Street off-ramp on September 22.
According to police spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the incident occurred around 09:10 while the victim was driving in a Toyota Rav 4. After passing the Total Filling Station, he was pulled over by a white VW Golf with flashing blue lights. He told police that once he brought his car to a stop next to the road, another vehicle (described as a Nissan), pulled in behind him. Four armed men then reportedly approached him and told him to get into the back seat of the Nissan, where his face was covered. They drove around for several hours, before the victim was allegedly let out of the car. The suspects made off with his car and personal belongings, including a laptop and several bank cards. No arrests have been made.

Police are investigating a house robbery which occurred at a farm on the R23 Balfour Road on September 22.
According to Capt Tshilate, two people had been shot during the robbery. Upon arrival, police found two spent cartridges on the scene. One of the victims had been transported to hospital, while the other one was still on the scene. A cellphone worth around R500 was the only item reported stolen during the robbery.

A man was reportedly robbed at gunpoint by two African males at Van Gogh Mews complex on September 24.
The suspects made off with R300.

A suspect was arrested for theft, following an incident which occurred at a house in Merz Street on September 24.
The suspect was charged and is expected to appear in Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Three suspects were arrested following an armed robbery at Usave in Breë Street on September 27.
The incident occurred around 15:00 after the suspects entered the shop and threatened the security guard. They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in a black BMW. The quick response of Constables Sello Nonyana and Andile Mngomezulu has led to their arrest shortly thereafter. Police recovered some of the stolen money and also seized the BMW (reported stolen in Vosloorus early in September) and unlicensed firearm. The suspects were charged with robbery, possession of stolen items and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are expected to appear in Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court soon.
