Nigel swimming pool remains closed due to maintenance work

The start of Spring on September 1 usually also marks the start of the swimming season.

Hot summer days are upon us!
Many of the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) community swimming pools have opened their gates and lifeguards are on standby.
All except for the Nigel swimming pool that will remain closed until maintenance work has been finalised.

The CoE has not given a clear indication as to when the pool will open to the public.
More information will be published as soon as it becomes available.

In addition to opening its community swimming pools, the CoE has also rolled out a “learn to swim” initiative for Grade 1 to 3 learners across Ekurhuleni. The programme will be presented by a total of 17 CoE lifeguard officials to ensure that Ekurhuleni becomes a drown-free city.

“They will be there to equip mainly the young children with basic swimming skills, to minimise incidents of drowning and to ensure that children are water safe. In case of emergency, they will also spring into action to save lives,” municipal spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

The start of Spring on September 1 usually also marks the start of the swimming season. However, water temperatures have been unfavourable due to the recent unpleasant weather conditions.

“The current average temperatures of the pool water are between 16C? to 17C, whereas the average water temperature suitable for swimming lessons at open pools should not be less than 22C?, therefore the cooler temperature are delaying the swimming lessons,” Gadebe explained.

He added, a total of ten schools participated the previous season, where over 2 510 learners partook in the initiative.

The CoE has therefore urged parents and teachers to continue encouraging and supporting the young children to take up these free swimming lessons. Drowning remains one of the most common causes of accidental deaths of children, making the ability to swim an essential life-saving skill.

Alrapark swimming pool, corner of Northern Road and Kreef Avenue, is open the public are welcome to visit the pool.
