Heidelberg Crime Report 10 to 15 September

  • Police are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident which occurred in Makapan Street next to Heidelberg Mall on September 10.
    According to police spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the victim claimed he was walking along the road on his way home, when he was approached by an unknown male who threatened him with a firearm. After robbing the victim of his cellphone and cash, the suspect shot him in the leg. He was later transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
  • A burglary occurred at a house in Mona Street, Jordaanpark on September 10
    Household items to the value of around R30 000 were reported stolen.
  • Another burglary occurred the same day at a house in Jordaan Street, Jordaanpark where a television was reported stolen.
  • Police are investigating an assault case, which occurred at the taxi rank area next to Heidelberg Mall on September 10.
  • A case of malicious damage to property was reported after a disruptive learner from a local school damaged computers and attempted to set fire to an office in the administrative building on September 10.
    Disciplinary action has been taken against the learner.
  • A Toyota Hilux bakkie worth around R260 000 was reported stolen at a car dealership in Voortrekker Street on September 10.
    According to Capt Tshilate, the owner reportedly took his vehicle to the workshop for a service, and later received a telephone call where he was told that his bakkie had been stolen. Despite a tracking device, the vehicle could not be located.
  • One person had been charged with reckless and/or negligent driving, after an accident involving two trucks and a vehicle on the R42 Heidelberg Road on September 11.
  • Another driver who was involved in a motor vehicle accident that occurred on the R23 Benoni Road on September 11, had been charged with reckless and/or negligent driving.
  • Police arrested a suspect for possession of stolen property, after he was found pushing a bicycle on the R23 Balfour Road on September 11.
    He told the police that it belongs to his brother and that he was going to pump a flat tyre. It was later discovered that the bicycle was reported stolen.
  • Police are investigating a case of theft from a motor vehicle, after several items were reported stolen from a car that was parked in front of a local business in Schoeman Street on September 11.
  • Police are investigating a case of attempted motor vehicle theft, following an incident which occurred at Life Ministries Christian Fellowship on September 13.
    The complainant reported that he parked his car at the church around 18:30 and when he returned at around 20:00, he noted that the driver’s and one of the passengers’ doors were open. He also noted that the dashboard was damaged severely and the ignition had been tampered with.
  • Police are investigating an attempted robbery and attempted murder, following a shooting incident which occurred at a house in Zuid Street on September 12.
    A 30-year-old man noted that the ceiling trap door inside his house was open. Upon closer investigation, a suspect who was hiding in the ceiling fired two shots, one of which entered through the victim’s stomach. He was later transported to Heidelberg Hospital for treatment.
  • A burglary occurred at a house in JG Strydom Street, Rensburg on September 12.
    A laptop and cellphone worth around R10 500 were reported stolen.
  • A business robbery occurred at a restaurant situated on the R23 Rensburg Road on September 12.
    According to Capt Tshilate the suspect entered the store pretending to be a customer and later produced a firearm. The suspect made off with cash, airtime vouchers and a cellphone. No arrests have been made.
  • A suspect was charged with shoplifting after he stole a bottle of whisky from a liquor store at Spar on September 14.
  • Police are investigating a case of theft, following an incident that occurred at Heidelberg Mall on September 14, when a female was approached by another female who told her that she could qualify for 50% discount on her groceries and that she will speak to the manager on her behalf. After leaving to speak to the manager, the victim discovered that her bank card is missing. Shortly thereafter she received sms notifications of cash withdrawals from her bank account.
  • Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an accident which occurred on the N3 near the weigh bridge on September 14 in which one person died as a result of his injuries.
  • A hijacking reportedly occurred on the N3 freeway on September 16.
    According to Capt Tshilate, a truck driver reported that as he left Durban in the morning, he was approached by a male and female hitchhiker who asked whether they could be dropped near Heidelberg. As they approached the Balfour off-ramp later the evening, the female hitchhiker asked the driver to pull over, as she needed to relieve herself. Once she exited the cab, the driver was overpowered by the male hitchhiker who produced a firearm and told him to get out of the truck. After being pulled into the bushes next to the road, the truck driver was tied up. The suspects made off with the truck. No arrests have been made.
