Heidelberg body builder chosen to represent Gauteng at the South African Championships.

Catherine Haskins obtained a second place at the NABBA/ World Fitness Federation SA provincials on September 1 in Pretoria. She is through to the South African Championships that will be held in Pretoria on September 29.

This was her first ever body building contest she competed in. What makes this achievement even more remarkable, is that Catherine was entered into a different category, but on the day of the competition she competed in the performance category.

The different categories in the women NABBA (Amateur Body Building Association) open class are;

  • Fitness
  • Performance
  • Athletic
  • Superbody
  • Extreme

The contestants are entered into a category according to their weight and height.

Each category has slightly different judging criteria;

  • Elegance, femininity, poise, skin tone and presentation are all judged on stage.

Catherine had to perform a short dance routine to display her figure and physical condition with a variety of poses.

Catherine is a teacher at Shalimar Ridge Primary School where she teaches English Grade 4, Life Orientation Skills Grade 7 and History Grade 6.  She is a mother of two small boys.

She always enjoyed the gym but only recently started body building.  A year ago her trainer encouraged her to enter a body building contest, which she agreed in the spur of the moment.

She trained for the Athletic category where she exercised for one hour, four times a week.

“Body building tests your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental abilities.  One learns a lot about yourself and the supporting people around you. This is not something that you can do without the support of your loved ones because it requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice”, said Catherine.

Catherine considers herself lucky as she has the support of her husband and trainer. She believes her biggest achievement with body building was the ability to motivate others.

She received a lot of messages on social media on how  she motivated others and inspired them to better themselves.
