DA to outline Recession Recovery Plan

The DA leader Mmusi Maimane will today (10 September) outline the party’s Recession Recovery Plan, following the recent announcement by Statistics South Africa (StatSA) that the South African economy is now in a technical recession.

“We cannot continue along the same path that has brought us to this point. That is why Parliament will debate ideas on how to revive our economy following my request to do so. There is hope for our country and its economy, and we require fresh and alternative ideas that can ignite growth and get our economy up and running again,” Maimane said in a media statement.

The DA claims that South Africans are getting poorer and poorer under the ANC government and says unemployment has reached its highest level since the dawn of democracy with almost 10 million jobless South Africans.

Maimane has also referred to VAT increasing for the first time in 20 years, saying it is a direct financial assault on the poor, working and middle class people.

“This year alone, we have witnessed the highest income tax bracket increasing for the third consecutive year and the rand is at a 27 month low – its weakest value since June 2016.”

He added that South Africa needs leadership that will grow the economy and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

“We must work towards reducing the unemployment rate, especially among our young people and deliver the much needed service delivery to the people of South Africa.”

Maimane will be joined later today by DA National Spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sekhe at Nkululeko House in Oppenheimer Street, Bruma to outline the party Recession Recovery Plan.
